Betta Fish Care Sheet

Betta fish are prone to obesity and bloating,so they only need to be fed once a day.Overfeeding not only burdens their bodies but also causes cloudy water,a problem particularly pronounced in small, unfiltered tanks.Uneaten food should be promptly removed after feeding to prevent excessive levels of nitrite and ammonia in the water, which can harm the fish's health.

I.A Balanced Diet for Betta Fish

Main Food Composition:The main diet for betta fish should include a variety of carnivorous fish food, such as flake food, pellet food,freeze-dried bloodworms, daphnia, and various frozen foods.

Feeding Precautions:Frozen foods must be completely thawed before feeding to prevent irritation to the fish's digestive system.

Young betta fish have small mouths,so they should be fed smaller pellets or crushed flake food.

Small treats can be given, such as thawed bloodworms, brine shrimp,or live food of the same species.Snack feeding must be strictly controlled to prevent betta fish from becoming obese due to excessive calorie intake.

II.Daily Care and Management of Betta Fish

Water Quality Maintenance:Change 10%-25%of the total aquarium water every 2-4 weeks. If the water quality deteriorates rapidly, the frequency of water changes can be increased appropriately.

Water quality testing must follow a standardized procedure:For the first two months after introducing new fish, adding aquatic plants,or installing new equipment, testing should be conducted at least weekly;after two months, this can be adjusted to monthly testing.Tests should cover pH,nitrite, nitrate, ammonia, carbonate hardness, and total hardness.

Before adding new water to the aquarium,it must be treated with a water conditioner to remove toxic substances such as chlorine, chloramines, and heavy metals.Simultaneously, the temperature of the new water must be consistent with the existing aquarium water temperature to avoid stress reactions in the betta fish due to excessive temperature differences.

Equipment Maintenance:Check the operation of aquarium filters, heaters, and other equipment daily to ensure they are functioning properly.

The frequency of filter media replacement or flushing needs to be adjusted flexibly according to water quality and the number of fish in the tank.It is generally recommended to do so once a month, which can be done simultaneously with water changes.
