Is Salmon Good for Cats?

Do cats love salmon? The answer is yes.Not only do cats favor salmon, but humans also greatly appreciate it:in the ranking of fish consumption, salmon and tuna are tied for second place, second only to shrimp, the most popular seafood.

Salmon is highly nutritious, rich in high-quality protein, various vitamins and minerals, and contains ample omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, making it a suitable food for humans, cats, and dogs.

However,it's important for pet owners to pay attention to how to feed salmon to their cats scientifically and safely.Veterinarians clearly point out that cats cannot survive on salmon alone;a single food cannot meet all their nutritional needs.

Benefits of Salmon for Cats and Feasibility of Feeding It

Is salmon beneficial for cats? Can cats be fed salmon normally?Dr.Renee Schmid(DVM,DABVT,DABT),a veterinary toxicologist at a pet poisoning hotline, gave a definitive answer:salmon can be fed to cats.

Dr.Schmid stated,"Any type of salmon and all parts thereof can be fed to cats."

While this doesn't need much elaboration, for the cat's safety,it's crucial to emphasize that the head, tail, and bones of the salmon must be removed before feeding. If swallowed by a cat, these parts may pose a choking risk or damage the intestines during digestion.

Cats are strict carnivores,a physiological characteristic that dictates they must obtain essential nutrients from meat to sustain life.Salmon not only provides cats with high-quality animal protein but also contains various vitamins and minerals necessary for their growth and development, such as niacin, potassium, selenium, and vitamins B6 and B12,which have a positive effect on the cat's coat health, intestinal function, and overall health.

However, salmon alone cannot meet all of a cat's nutritional needs.A cat's healthy growth requires a balanced diet, ensuring sufficient intake of fats, carbohydrates, proteins, and various micronutrients. It's worth noting that if both the pet owner and the cat enjoy salmon, there's no need to worry about satisfying the cat's taste preferences—most dry or wet cat food likely contains salmon, ensuring nutritional balance while meeting the cat's dietary preferences.

Safe Ways to Feed Salmon to Cats

Salmon is widely used in human diets. The following will explain in detail whether salmon prepared in different ways is suitable as food for cats and related precautions.

I.Raw Salmon

Can cats eat raw salmon?Dr.Schmid states that cats can eat it,but this does not mean that raw salmon is the best choice for them.

“To avoid gastrointestinal upset in cats, cooked salmon is more suitable than raw salmon,”Dr.Schmid added.Dogs that eat raw salmon and other types of fish may develop salmon poisoning.

“This disease is caused by raw salmon infected with Neorickettsia helminthoeca bacteria and Nanophyetus salmincola,”Dr.Schmid explained.“However, cats appear to be resistant to this disease.”

It should be clear, however, that even if this disease does not affect cats, raw salmon and other raw meats still pose safety risks to pets and humans.Ten years ago,the American Academy of Animal Hospitals(AAHA),with the support of the American Academy of Feline Veterinarians(AAFP),issued a statement explicitly opposing feeding cats raw food.

The statement points out:"Homemade raw food carries safety risks because retail meat intended for human consumption may be contaminated with pathogens. Many pathogens present in raw protein can be transmitted to humans through contact with the food itself, pets,or environmental surfaces.Worryingly, many of these pathogens have been shown to be resistant to multiple antibiotics."

To mitigate these risks,it is recommended to thoroughly cook salmon and other meats fed to cats before consumption.

II.Canned Salmon

Can cats eat canned salmon? The answer is not absolute, and it is not recommended to feed it to them indiscriminately.

Various types of canned salmon may contain additives or flavorings that can cause gastrointestinal upset or even be toxic to cats. Therefore,it is best to avoid feeding cats canned salmon intended for human consumption.Furthermore,to enhance flavor, canned salmon often contains a large amount of salt, while cats require very low sodium levels in their diet;excessive salt intake can burden their kidneys.

III.Smoked Salmon

Can cats eat smoked salmon? The answer is yes,but caution is advised.Similar to canned salmon, smoked salmon may have additional salt or other spices added during processing and cooking. These ingredients are detrimental to a cat's health. Before feeding,it's crucial to confirm the absence of harmful additives and control the amount given.

IV.Salmon Skin

The fatty acid(Omega-3 and Omega-6)content in salmon skin may be higher than in the flesh. Therefore, while the head, fins, and all bones should be removed, leaving the skin is acceptable. If your cat has a sensitive stomach, closely observe its condition after feeding to check for any post-meal discomfort or other abnormalities.

V.Cooked Salmon

For pet owners, feeding cats cooked salmon is the safest and most scientifically sound method.

Before cooking, thoroughly remove the salmon's head, fins, and bones. It can then be cooked by grilling, frying,or boiling. It's important to note that deep-cooking may cause some nutrient loss in salmon, but it maximizes food safety.

Furthermore, many salmon recipes for humans include other ingredients. If you're unsure whether these ingredients are suitable for cats,it's recommended to feed them only plain cooked salmon to avoid ingesting harmful components and affecting their health.

Do cats need salmon oil supplements?

Fish oil supplements are readily available in pharmacies and supermarkets, and their benefits for humans are widely recognized. Many people consult medical experts about their suitability.Studies suggest that fish oil(including salmon oil)may also offer some benefits for cats.

However,it's crucial to consult a veterinarian before introducing any new supplements to your pet.A veterinarian may acknowledge the benefits of salmon oil supplementation and deem it worthwhile;however, they may also assess the cat's specific health condition and determine that certain underlying health issues might cause salmon oil or other supplements to become risk factors for nutritional imbalances in the cat.

Salmon Cat Treats:Preparation and Feeding Considerations

After thoroughly removing the bones from raw salmon and cooking it,can you feed your cat a large piece directly? The answer is no.It's important to understand that while cooked salmon is beneficial for cats,it must be part of their balanced diet.Pet owners can consult a veterinarian nutritionist to understand how to appropriately add salmon to their cat's daily diet or only feed it as a treat.Veterinarians recommend that the calories provided by treats should be controlled to 10%or less of the pet's total daily calorie intake. So,how should the calorie intake of salmon as a treat be controlled?

For example,a 10-pound(approximately 4.5 kg)cat, according to estimates from the World Small Animal Veterinary Association, requires approximately 270 to 290 calories per day. This means that the calories provided by treats should only be controlled to around 30 calories.

However, according to data from the USDA Food Data Center, half a piece of salmon has an average of about 356 calories, far exceeding the daily calorie limit for cat treats.

Recommended Salmon Feeding Amount for Cats

For a 10-pound cat,a suitable salmon treat(approximately 30 calories)is only one-tenth the calories of half a salmon slice.

Therefore, cats are very likely to overeat their favorite salmon.Veterinarians say that if cats eat cooked salmon long-term,they may gradually become dependent on it,and may even reduce their intake of a balanced daily diet in order to eat salmon treats, leading to nutritional imbalances.

Therefore, pet owners are advised to strictly follow recommended salmon cooking methods and precisely control the feeding amount, ensuring the cat's health while enjoying the heartwarming moments of their cat's delight in eating their favorite fish.
