Animal lovers have been amazed by a farm dog who saved the life of a young calf—without any direction or assistance from her owner.

Bethany Hoornstra,28,from Michigan,runs a farm with the help of her livestock guardian dogs,Great Pyrenees breeds she lovingly calls her“polar bears.”Now one of those dogs,Honey,has gained online admiration after rescuing a newborn calf that arrived unexpectedly early during a freezing night.

In a video posted to her Instagram account bedbeth.beyondon February 9,Hoornstra starts by showing herself kneeling in the snow,wrapping her dog in a hug,with the caption:“Honey saved a life today.”

She explained that as dawn arrived and she stepped outside to begin her farm chores,Honey immediately alerted her to a calf that had been born overnight and was now hypothermic.

Hoornstra showed the calf lying in deep snow in the field,surrounded by other cows.Despite having never dealt with this kind of situation before,and with her fiancésix hours away,she knew she needed to act quickly.

She wrapped the calf in blankets,placed him in her car with the heat turned up high,and used a hairdryer to warm his small body.Hours later,his temperature returned to normal and he began to show signs of recovery.

Once the calf was strong enough to stand and walk,Hoornstra brought him back outside.After the farm dogs curiously sniffed the new arrival,she reunited him with his mother.

Although the mother showed interest in the calf and behaved kindly toward him,she was unwilling to let him nurse.Hoornstra then took on the role of caring for him day and night,hand-feeding him and working to keep him warm.

While the calf’s future remained uncertain at the time,Hoornstra was resolved to do everything she could for him.She ended the video by expressing how grateful she is to Honey,adding,“If it wasn’t for her,I don’t think I would have seen him in time.

“She is truly such a smart,special dog,and I love her so much,”Hoornstra said.

Thankfully,she later shared with Newsweek:“I’m happy to report the calf is doing great and is back with his mother,healthy and happy!”

Honey’s remarkable rescue and Hoornstra’s unwavering effort to save the calf received a huge response on Instagram,where the post earned over 100,000 likes.

“Extra kisses for Honey—the goodest girl,”wrote one touched commenter.Another praised,“Honey is the best,and you’re doing an amazing job keeping that calf alive!”

The Great Pyrenees is widely chosen as a working dog,especially as a livestock guardian,originally bred to protect herds in harsh mountain climates.According to the American Kennel Club,the breed is known for its independent character,gentle temperament,strong loyalty to family,and powerful protective instincts.
