Owner Checks Pet Cam—Suddenly Realizes Dog Has Been Lying About One Thing

Stephani Barnes and Riley Day adopted their dog Waylon from a shelter when he was a puppy. Now nine years old,the Labrador-Pit Bull mix has reached an age where his owners try to limit his jumping.Barnes told Newsweek via email that after especially active days—like chasing squirrels or swimming—Waylon’s joints often ache the next morning,so they give him supplements and help him onto furniture when needed.

Recently, however, the couple discovered that Waylon’s dramatic requests to be lifted onto the bed are strictly for their benefit. After checking their pet camera, they watched him hop onto furniture without hesitation, revealing that his nightly routine is an Oscar-worthy performance.

In a TikTok video posted last week under the account stephandriles,Barnes shared clips comparing how Waylon acts around her versus when he’s home alone. She first checked the camera to see who had knocked over the kitchen trash—which turned out to be Waylon—and noticed that when a child-proof lock stopped him,he calmly moved on to the table, something he never seems able to do when they’re home.

“He couldn’t get into the trash,so I almost stopped watching,”Barnes said.“But right after he gave up,I was surprised to see him hop up on the table like it was nothing,as if he’d done it a million times.”

Barnes believes Waylon was“scoping out”the countertops for any leftover food, which the couple rarely leaves out.She was especially surprised he jumped on that particular table since they hardly use it for meals.

While amused by his act,the couple was also shocked to learn Waylon was behind the trash incident and the counter surfing. They had installed the cameras after one of their dogs began having accidents and another was getting into items on the counter.

“We thought Waylon was having the accidents because he’s older, and that our more energetic dog,Jester, was getting on the counter,”Barnes explained.“Turns out it was the opposite.”

Although Waylon’s table-hopping antics are funny, experts warn that behaviors like counter surfing can pose safety risks. The American Kennel Club(AKC)notes that even one successful“reward”—such as finding leftover food—can reinforce the habit, encouraging dogs to keep jumping onto counters or tables. The AKC advises keeping surfaces clear of food to discourage the behavior and prevent pets from ingesting something harmful, like grapes, garlic,or other toxic ingredients.

For older dogs like Waylon, frequently jumping on and off furniture can strain their joints.PetMD reports that senior dogs are more prone to arthritis and joint discomfort, and repeated high-impact motions like jumping can worsen inflammation or lead to pain the following day.

The TikTok video quickly drew amused reactions from viewers who appreciated Waylon’s dramatic flair. As of Wednesday, the clip had gained over 1.1 million views,198,400 likes, and 235 comments.

“Pick that baby up.He’s probably tired from climbing on the tables,”wrote one viewer.Another joked,“Now we know why his bones hurt so much,”pointing out the contrast between his helpless act and his off-camera agility.A third commenter perfectly captured the surprise:“Omg it’s a miracle.”

Together, the reactions show viewers are fully invested in Waylon’s double life—as a bedtime drama king and a solo stunt dog.
