A Bright New Day for Senior Cat Nocturne

In July 2025,a senior cat named Nocturne arrived at the ASPCA Adoption Center through a continuing partnership with Animal Care Centers of NYC.While Nocturne was exceptionally friendly and affectionate, she required medical attention—something the ASPCA was ready to provide.

Over the following month,15-year-old Nocturne received necessary treatment along with plenty of affection. She was found to have early-stage chronic kidney disease and was placed on a special diet to help manage the condition. She also underwent a dental procedure that involved the extraction of nine teeth.

Once medically cleared,Nocturne moved into a foster home, where she enjoyed the comforts of a household while waiting for the right adopter.Older cats like her often wait longer to find a permanent match, and Nocturne remained in foster care until late in the year, when a special person came across her profile on the ASPCA website.

Falling in Love Again

The previous fall,Olivia D.had lost Inks,a beloved cat she adopted eight years earlier from the ASPCA Adoption Center.

“I wasn’t sure when I’d be ready to adopt again,”Olivia recalls.“The apartment felt so quiet without him.”

Grieving the loss of Inks was difficult, but Olivia had support from loved ones and counseling resources offered through her veterinarian’s office. In time, she realized how much she missed the daily companionship and routines that come with caring for a pet. While she knew she would always miss Inks, she felt ready to open her home and heart to another animal in need.

Olivia began browsing the Adoption Center’s website and was immediately drawn to Nocturne, who looked remarkably like Inks. Her profile described her as a gentle senior who loves petting and cuddling—and it made Olivia smile right away.

“Senior cats often wait the longest for a forever home.I couldn’t get her off my mind until I finally sent in my adoption application,”Olivia says.

As the adoption process moved forward,Olivia learned how memorable Nocturne had been to everyone who met her. They were first introduced over a Zoom call with Nocturne’s foster caregiver. Her friendly, chatty demeanor had everyone on the call laughing.

“It didn’t feel like I was meeting a frail older cat,”Olivia says.“It felt more like being introduced to a very self-assured kitty who still has so much life and love to give.”

A New Home

Nocturne’s adoption was finalized in early January, and she soon settled into her new home.At first she was naturally cautious in the unfamiliar space, but she never hesitated to seek comfort from Olivia.Within the first hour,Nocturne was rubbing against her legs and nudging her hand for attention.

Nocturne—or Nox,for short—is now happily settled in,and Olivia loves discovering her full personality. She’s made it clear that cuddle time is non-negotiable.

“If I stop petting her too soon, she’s persistent with headbutts and plenty of chatter to remind me she wants more,”Olivia says.

Olivia knew adopting a senior cat might bring added responsibilities, but Nocturne’s health needs have been manageable. She transitioned smoothly into her new home, eating her special diet and using the litter box without issue.

Nocturne is in good health overall, though she needs a little help jumping onto the bed.To assist her,Olivia bought a small footstool.

“She took to it right away and now uses it confidently to climb up for bedtime snuggles. It’s a simple adjustment that lets her stay independent and comfortable,”Olivia explains.

Nocturne has shown herself to be an adaptable and spirited cat.Now Olivia’s focus is on supporting her health for as long as possible.

Enjoying Life to the Fullest

Adopting Nocturne has been deeply rewarding for Olivia. She’s been reminded of the powerful feeling that comes with earning the trust and affection of a rescued pet.Watching Nocturne grow more confident and at ease has been especially meaningful.

“Nocturne completely changed how I see older pets,”Olivia notes.“She’s shown me that senior animals can be playful and loving at any age or stage of life.”

These days,Nocturne brings a calm,steady presence to Olivia’s home.

“Whether she’s purring beside me or nudging my hand for more scratches, she makes even small moments feel meaningful,”Olivia says.

The two learn more about each other every day,and Olivia is grateful to have found such a sweet companion.

For anyone thinking of adopting,Olivia encourages keeping an open heart toward older animals during the search.Seniors deserve attention—they still have so much love to give, and are often just waiting for someone to see them.

“The cat who isn’t jumping at the kennel door might be the one who quietly changes your life,”Olivia says.
